خلاصه مقاله:
This paper presents a brief introduction on air pollution and the sources of this global problem, contribution of power plants in chemical air pollution and a comparison with other sources which indicates that power plants are not the sole or largest contributors to environmental problems. The power plant pollutants of most attention are: 1-From fossil power plants: sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon oxides, particulate matter, and thermal pollution. 2-From nuclear power plants: radioactivity release, radioactive wastes, and thermal pollution. In this paper, discussion is devoted to environmental aspects related to the fossil fuel power plants and the methods and technologies used to reduce their effects. Aqaba thermal power station ATPS, located at the far south of Jordan on the Aqaba gulf, is introduced as a case study in which emissions levels and emissions control systems are presented. The project of conversion the combustion system from heavy fuel oil to natural gas (expected to be handed over in the 1" quarter of the year 2003) is environmentally highlighted and emissions level reduction is indicated.
