خلاصه مقاله:
One of the major problems that translators face with when rendering a text is choosing appropriate equivalents. Different factors cause the problem, one of which is the inequality of semantic fields of words in the two languages. The problem comes up to be more complicated and sometimes insolvable when the translator is going to render a text into a language which lacks the concept and an equivalent term. Philosophy is one of the fields in which Iranian translators in the last decades have been facing the problem. The aim of the article is to investigate the Iranian translators' approaches and strategies in solving the problem of equivalence for new terms. As different varieties of western philosophy originates from different countries and is presented in different languages, a vast variety of people with different interests and language abilities have embarked on the activity of translation of philosophy books in Iran. The groups of translators someway can be divided into MA and PhD students, professional philosophy translators who are generally university professors and professional literary translators. But investigating the approaches of all the groups was not impossible in this article, firstly because of time limitation and secondly because of students' low level of language ability and unfamiliarity with translation principles and techniques, the result of which is lack of rule-based methods for solving the problem. Therefore, only the approaches of professional translators are investigated. To do this, six translators has been chosen, three translators for each group. In the article, translators' solutions are investigated through a comparative study of terms emerging in the text and bilingual word lists attached to the end of the books. Through a discussion on the ways and argumentations behind choosing an equivalent, it is stated that individual argumentations in spite of group argumentations are not expressed but they follow special patterns. Then, translators' works are studied and the results are discussed. In brief, the results can be stated in this way that each of the groups has its own attitude towards language and translation resulting in different approaches and strategies. The main concern of professional philosophy translators seems to be translating content faithfully but their inclination to source text sometimes has resulted in unfamiliar expressions. Loan translation and calque are the main strategies taken by the translators. The main concern of the literary translators also seems to be presenting content faithfully but the inclination towards target language has resulted in their special attention to word-formation abilities of Persian. Domestication approach has made them to choose compounding and derivation as the main strategies.
