خلاصه مقاله:
Translation of slang still remains one of the most controversial issues. There are no certain rules on how to translate slang words and expressions, therefore, it is the translator who has to set priorities and choose the most suitable translation strategy (Loreta Ulvydienė, & Brigita Abramovaitė, 2012). However, as it turns out, little research has been conducted into the actual use of slang and colloquial terms. This study intends to explore how slang and colloquial expressions of Salinger’s (1951) Catcher in the rye can be transferred from English into Persian in order to determine the difficulties in transferring them and to illuminate the strategies applied by the translators. Such analysis helps to determine what the overall macro strategy has been. In fact, every micro strategy serves as an indicator to show what considerations the translator has had while translating words, phrases or sentences.( Erikson,2010).The theoretical part of the study presents the definition of Slang, the difference between slang Jargon, Argot and colloquial terms, difficulty of slang translation, and numerates some of suggested models for slang translation. The empirical part analyses examples of slang and colloquial terms identified in Salinger’s (1951) The Catcher in the Rye and its two Persian translations. This book is chosen because it contains numerous examples of slang words and colloquial expressions that cannot be neglected or ignored, making it suitable for the aim of this research. The study does not analyze the contents of the entire novel, however, some excerpt which provide the study with an adequate number of slang and colloquial terms, is analyzed to identify which micro strategies the translators have chosen and, on the basis of the found results, a general indication of the translators’ chosen macro strategy is given. The slangs were identified with the help of Oxford Advanced Dictionary of Learners and NTC’s Dictionary of American Slang and Colloquial Expressions by Spears (2000). The data were then compared with their Persian translations,(translated by Karimy(1966) and Najafy(1999) and finally, grouped according to the translation strategies suggested by López’s (1997) model and quantified consequently to be analyzed. The results suggested that both of the translators tend to retain more of the original slang and colloquial meaning present in the source text. Both translators significantly used more Translation by Equivalence method of translation. Translation by Modification ( i.e. explaining more or paraphrasing) was the second highly used method, helping the reader to get through the meaning. Translation by omission and literal Translation were used less. Considering macro strategies, it was argued that both translators tended to Dynamic Equivalence rather than Formal Equivalence . Because they both used Translation by Equivalence method more than other methods, and whenever they could not attain an equivalence translation easily; they resorted to Translation by Modification method to resolve the problem
