خلاصه مقاله:
The present article would be an attempt to read two peoms by Robert Browning Porphyria’s Lover and Andrea Del Sarto in the light of the feministic criticism proposed by Elain Showalter. She identifies three phases of women literary development. The three stages are: Feminine (1840-1880), Feminist (1880-1920), and Female (1920-present) (224). She also proposes some models in discussing a literary work. Her Biological and cultural models are the ones that seem applicable to these two poems of Robert Browning. Therefore, this will be an attempt to apply these models to the poems. While these models are only organized with regard to women’s writing, it will be demonstrated that they can also be applied to the writing of a male author. The only information given about the female characters is in their relation to their male counterparts. Moreover, another common theme dominant in these two poems can be examined through the attitudes that the male characters or Browning himself develop towards the female ones of the poems. They are supposed to be the source of inspiration and solace for the male characters. These men’s attempts to posses the women could be justified because they want to retain these elements of peace and support. Therefore, the women of the poems seem to play a role that deserves to be studied more closely. The two poems, in the special way that they portray the female characters, yield appropriately to the feministic criticism. Elaine Showalter’s proposed feministic approach can be fittingly applied to this way of treating the females in poetry.
