This study was caried out in Ali-Abad-Kamin station to evaluate follicle characteristics and their relationship with pelt quality of Grey Shirazy sheep in years 2001. In this study from 150 lambs in birth and 4 months old, 150 ewes ( 3-4 years old) and 18 rams ( parents of lambs) skin samples were taken with biopsy punch from the right mid-side. After histological evaluation, the skin follicle characteristics including primary and secondary follicle density (mm2) and secondary follicle to primary follicle ratio (S/P) were determined. Primary follicle density (mm2) were 3.2 0.7, 3.5 1 and 15 3.3 in rams, ewes and lambs respectively. Secondary follicle density (mm2) were 9 1.6, 10.8 2 and 34 6.2 in rams, ewes and lambs. The S/P ratio were 4.6 1.1, 3.7 1.02 and 2.8 0.6 in rams, ewes and lambs respectively.There was no significant diffrence in the effect of sex on follicle characterisrics in rams and ewes, but the difference was significant among rams, ewes and lambs. In four months old primary, secondary follicle density (mm2) and S/P ratio were 7 1.5, 21 6 and 3.5 0.7. Between follicle characteristics in lambs at birth and 4 months old the difference was significant. The obtained genetics and phenotipic correlation between S/P ratio with pelt score, curl type, lustre and curl harmony were 0.25, 0.44, 0.25 and 0.37 and between secondary follicle density with curl type, lustre and curl harmony were 0.4, 0.46 and 0.17 respectively. The obtained genetics and phenotipic correlation between all of the pelt characteristics were positive 102 and medium to high. The heritability estimate for follicle and pelt characteristics were between 0.02 to 0.7. Key words: follicle characteristics, pelt, correlation, heritability, gray shirazy sheep
