This paper deals with a study on application of Z-source converters (ZSCs) in HVDC light transmission system for enhancement of its capabilities. HVDC light which is generally based on Voltage-Sourced Converters (VSCs) has several advantages over classic HVDC due to their fully controllable switches. Compact filter and smoothing components, reactive power controlling, fast response and more stability are some of the HVDC light advantages which are signified by using the Z-source converter. Z-source converter has many inherent advantages and overcomes the conceptual and theoretical barriers and limitations of the conventional voltage-source and current-source converters. A ZSC-based HVDC system is designed and simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Advantages of the proposed system areinvestigated. The simulation results verify technical feasibility on the Z-source application in HVDC light and show desired system performance especially during a DC line fault conditions.
