Tourism industry has grown rapidly and the intensive use of energy in tourism is a serious concern for the long-term economic, social and environmental sustainability of the sector. Most of the energy consumption in the tourism sector is attributable to transport and accommodation and using renewable energy sources can greatly decrease the environmental footprint of tourism. Renewable energies are defined as tapping to energy flow of nature and can be used over and over without harming the environment. In this study we discussed about tourism energy consumption, renewable energy sources, advantages and positive impacts of them, also limitations and disadvantages of using renewable energy sources. Indeed SWOT analysis of the use of renewable energy sources in the tourism industry was discussed. In the following, renewable energy systems and technologies for off-grid facilities for different uses were presented separately, also we dissused about some steps to encourage investors of the tourism industry to support projects related to using renewable energies. Governments and the private sector including the tourism sector can work closely to establish realistic greenhouse gas emission targets and provide resources for research and demonstration projects to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.
