We have developed flame retardant polyurethanes and polyurethane nanocomposites. Three series of thermoplastic elastomer polyurethanes were synthesized to investigate the effect of incorporating 3-chloro-1, 2- propanediol or nanoclay on synthesis, mechanical, thermal properties and also resistance to burning and chemicals. Polyurethane soft segments were based on poly (propylene glycol).The hard segments were based on either 3-chloro-1, 2-propanediol (CPD) or 1, 4-buthane diol (BDO) in combination with methyl phenyl Di-isocyanate (MDI). In the third series CPD used as chain extender and nanoclay incorporated named polyurethane nanocomposites (FRPUN). Polyurethanes and nanocomposites were characterized by ignitibility tests also TGA was used to study thermal stability. The intercalation and dispersion microstructure of OMMT (organo montmorillonite) in the nanocomposites have been investigated by TEM. The results indicate hard segment content of FRPUs and FRPUNs affects on final properties. The flame retardant polyurethanes that contain higher content of chain extender in the chain are more stable to thermal degradation. It could be concluded that better flame retardancy and thermal stability could be obtained for the samples containing nanoclay.
