خلاصه مقاله:
Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Zinc (Zn), is an essential trace element and a component of many enzymes, is involved in the synthesis, storage and release of insulin. The aim of this study was comparison of plasma zinc level in metabolic syndrome and healthy group in Yazd.Materials & Methods: In this cross sectional study, 79 persons with metabolic syndrome and 70 healthy individuals (20-60 years old) were included. Plasma zinc level of two groups were compared. Also correlation between zinc and FBS, blood pressure, waist circumference (WC), HDL and triglycerides evaluated. Analysis performed by independent T-test and one-way ANOVA by SPSS version 20. A p≤0.05 were considered significant. Results: Zn level in metabolic syndrome patients was 84.36 µg/dl and in the other group was 88.83 µg/dl(P:0.029). Zinc level in patients with and without hypertension was 79.80 and 90.95 µg/dl respectively(P:0.02). Zn level in individuals with low HDL level was 82.55 µg/dl and 91.95 µg/dl in normal HDL group(P:0.002). Zinc Level in individuals with FBS≥ 100 mg/dl was 86.02 µg/dl and in subjects with normal FBS was 87.15 µg/dl(P:0. 23). The Zn level in individual with TG≥150 level was 88.67 µg/dl and in the normal TG level was 84.88 µg/dl(P:0.704). The Zn level in individual with high waist circumference was 84.67 µg/dl and in the other group was 88.53 µg/dl(P:0.083).Conclusion: Low level of Zn associated with high blood pressure and low HDL level. Low level of Zn observed in metabolic syndrome.
