Background and Objective: Grievous side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy as a treatment for cancer is inevitable to paitens ,Oral mucositis is an inflammation and mucosal membrane damage, wich is considered as the worst and the most painful side effect that can cause anorexia and lesions for the paitent and afterwards, the mouth infections . Morus nigra plant has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anti-oxidant effects through its anthocyanin and phenolic acid metabolits. Therefore, considering the anti-inflammatory effect of Morus nigra, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Morus nigra mouthwash on oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy.Materials and Methods: This study was a double blind clinical trial study. 62 patients under the 5- Fluorouracil chemotherapy regimen divided into two groups of intervention (31 cases) and placebo (31 cases). In the intervention group, Morus nigra mouthwash was administered to patients three times a day at a rate of 10cc from the first day of chemotherapy to the 14th day after chemotherapy. The placebo group received Normal saline mouthwash. Then patients were examined by oral diseases specialist at the end of the first and second weeks after chemotherapy, and their degree of mucositis was recorded according to WHO criteria.Finding: Deduction of mucositis side effects such as lesions and inability in eating and drinking in chemotherapic patients was observed. and also , there was a significant difference in the severity of oral mucositis in Morus nigra group compared to placebo group .The severity of oral mucositis was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the placebo group (P <0.05).Conclusion: This study showed that Morus nigra mouthwash can reduce the severity of oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy; therefore, this mouthwash can warrantee the mouth heath without having any side effect for the patient.
