Association of Reproductive and Menstrual Characteristics with Mammographic Density

Background: Mammographic density has been recognized as a risk factor forbreast cancer, but the association between potential effective factors andmammographic density has not been fully studied in Asian women.We conducteda study to investigate the association of mammographic breast density with severalmenstrual and reproductive characteristics.Methods: Screening mammography was performed in women above ۴۰ yearsattending the breast clinic of Arash Women’s Hospital, Tehran, Iran, for breastcancer screening. The densities were classified by two expert radiologistsaccording to the parenchymal mammographic classification system of theAmerican College of Radiologists. Those with a history of breast cancer or renaldisease, recent hormone replacement therapy, or consumption of vitamin Dsupplements were excluded.Results: Overall, ۸۲۳ patients were assessed. Mammographic density wasassociated with higher age at first birth (P < ۰.۰۰۱), lower parity (P< ۰.۰۰۱), BMI(P < ۰.۰۰۱), and premenopausal status (P <۰.۰۰۱). However, no associations wereobserved with age at menarche (P= ۰.۰۵۷) and menstrual pattern (P= ۰.۹۷۳).Conclusions: Our study showed an association between mammographicdensity and age, parity, BMI, and age at first birth, and no association withmenstrual pattern in terms of regularity and age at menarche. In addition,mammographic density was significantly higher in premenopausal women.
