The Anesthetic Effects of Clove Oil and ۲-Phenoxyethanol on Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at Different Concentrations and Temperatures

In this study, anesthetic effects of five different concentrations of ۲-phenoxyethanol (۰.۲, ۰.۳, ۰.۴, ۰.۵ and ۰.۶ ml/L) and clove oil (۰.۵۰, ۰.۷۵, ۱.۰۰, ۱.۲۵ and ۱.۵۰ ml/L) on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were studied at temperatures ۷, ۱۳ and ۱۸ºC. For this purpose, ۹۰۰ fish (۳۹.۰۸ ± ۱.۱۳ g and ۱۵.۴۸ ± ۰.۲۱ cm) were used in the experiment. Induction time of ۲-phenoxyethanol and clove oil varied between ۱.۰۵ and ۳.۳۶ min at all concentrations, except for ۰.۲ ml/L (for ۲-phenoxyethanol only) and at every temperature application. Full recovery time occurred between ۲.۴۴ and ۷.۱۴ min for ۲-phenoxyethanol and ۳.۲۳ – ۶.۱۱ min for clove oil. It was found that full recovery times significantly increased with increase in ۲-phenoxyethanol concentrations (r۲=۰.۸۱). The same increasing trend was observed in clove oil, but the increase was not strong compared to ۲-phenoxyethanol (r۲=۰.۲۱). On the other hand, full induction times of ۲-Phenoxyethanol and clove oil significantly declined with the increase in concentrations (r۲=۰.۷۴ r۲=۰.۸۴ for ۲-phenoxyethanol and clove oil, respectively). Based on the ideal induction (less than ۳ min) and recovery (less than ۵ min) time criteria, it can be suggested that the most appropriate concentrations for rainbow trout were ۰.۳, ۰.۴ and ۰.۵ ml/L for ۲-phenoxyethanol and ۰.۵۰, ۰.۷۵ and ۱.۰۰ ml/L for clove oil.
