A Review on Enhancing Urban Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus with Green Roofs

Green roofs have gained popularity in many countries as they offer numerous advantagesand benefits in urban environments in recent years. They effectively address waterconcerns, reduce energy consumption, and mitigate the heat island effect. Additionally,green roofs contribute to reducing urban sprawl, promoting food production, andproviding various ecosystem services. This comprehensive review explores the role andpositive impact of green roofs in the interconnectedness of water, energy, food, andecosystems. Through case studies, it examines future challenges and directions, includingtrade-offs and synergies within the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) nexus. Thereview also highlights design considerations, implementation strategies, and policyactions. It underscores the potential of green roofs in creating sustainable and resilientcities, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts and appropriate policies.Furthermore, this paper offers valuable insights for future research and policydevelopment in the field of green roofs and the WEFE nexus.
