The Relationship between Vocabulary Size, Vocabulary Depth and Listening Comprehension among MA Students of TEFL

This study aimed to examine the relationship between two dimensions of vocabulary knowledge, size and depth, and listening comprehension in English as a foreign language (EFL) context. A total of ١٠٤ MA freshmen majoring in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at Islamic Azad University of Ahvaz participated in this study. Furthermore, this study investigated whether size or depth was a stronger predictor of learners’ listening comprehension. Three tests were adopted; Vocabulary Levels Test, Word Associates Test, and Listening Comprehension Test. Pearson correlations and multiple regression analyses were run to find the answers to the research questions. Results of these analyses revealed that there were positively strong correlations between the scores on the three language tests, and vocabulary depth with the correlation coefficient of (r=0.55, p <0.5) showed a higher and stronger correlation than size with the correlation coefficient (r=0.51, p <0.5) depth proved to be a more powerful predictor of listening comprehension scores than size. The findings of this study have some implications for EFL learners, teachers, and material developers.
