In the present study the situation of pistachio science (especially functional indicators) in Iran and the world was investigated. Based on the findings of Scopus, Proquest and Derwent scientific database,75.5% of scientific documents were related to the scientific research papers which are published in valid scientific journals. The largest number of scientific articles (773 or 53.6%) was in the field of agriculture. The next rankings were in the field of biochemistry, genetic and molecular biology (7.6%), chemistry (6.7%), and environmental sciences (5.3%). The number of articles in other fields was less than 5%. Most pistachio articles (129 articles) were published in 2011. The Iran Pistachio Research Institute has the highest number of scientific articles (90 articles equivalent to 10.7% of all articles). The second and third ranking was belonging to U.S. Davis University with 88 articles (10.4%) and Tehran University with 54 articles (6.4%). Azad Eslami University (6.2%), Shiraz University (4.0%), Haran university of turkey (3.7%), Tarbiat Moddares University (3.7%), Vali- E- Asr University (3.7%), Ferdowsi university of Mashاad (3.5%) and pistachio research institute of turkey were obtained ranking of 4 to 10 of pistachio science producer. Iran, U.S. and Turkey having 34.6, 19.8 and 16.1% of the articles (a total of 70.5%) respectively, are leaders of pistachio science producer in the world. Total number of register research institute of turkey (3.2%) obtained the ranking of 4th to 10 th. According to the results from Scopus up to now 40 countries has a role in production of pistachio science. Among these countries Iran, USA and with 34.6%, 19.8% and 16.1% (70.5% of pistachio science) are first producers of pistachio science. Italy (4.5%), Spain (3.5%), Tunisia (2.5%), Australia (2.2%), Greek (2.2%), UK (1.9%) and Canada (1.8%) were also among 10 producer of pistachio science. Inventions in the field of pistachio science were 93 inventions that 61.3% of it has been recorded in the field of chemistry. 46.2% of inventions were in the field of instruments and 41.9% of them were in the field of food science and technology. The lowest number of inventions was related to the energy and fuels. Other inventions (18.5%) were related to the engineering and medicine. According to Proquest database, there was 26 thesis on the pistachio topics. Also 46 books have published on pistachios topics in Iran. The above results indicate that for keeping the country ranks first in the production of pistachio science, as well as a revival in pistachio production in competition with other countries, especially USA, more effort need. Despite the high scientific potential in the field of pistachio science, presence of only one specialized research institute, inadequate research funding, and low number of pistachio scientific members in the country, shows the gaps clearly.Keywords: functional indicators, pistachio, research
