چکیده مقاله:

Background: Hypoglycemia and hypocalcemia are common metabolic disorders in high-risk infants that may cause serious complicationsin case of late diagnosis. Objectives: This study intended to determine the prevalence of hypoglycemia and hypocalcemia among high-risk infants. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on all the infants prone to hypoglycemia and hypocalcemia admitted to the neonatalward of Fatemieh Hospital in Hamadan from September ۲۰۱۶ to October ۲۰۱۷. If infants’ blood glucose was less than ۴۰ mg/dLwithin the first four hours after birth and less than ۴۵ mg/dL within ۴ - ۲۴ hours after birth, they were diagnosed with hypoglycemi. If their blood calcium was less than ۷ and ۸ mg/dL in preterm and full-term infants, respectively, within ۱۲ - ۲۴ hours after birth, theywere diagnosed with hypocalcemia. Results: A total of ۸۸۳ infants participated in this study. The prevalence of hypoglycemia and hypocalcemia was ۳۹.۱% and ۱.۸%,respectively. Themeanbirth weight was ۲۱۲۴.۱ ۲۷۲.۸ g, and the gestational age was ۳۵ ۱.۸۸ weeks. Hypoglycemia had a significantrelationship with preterm birth (P = ۰.۰۰۲), lower mean birth weight (P = ۰.۰۰۱), and low Apgar score at ۱ and ۵ minutes after birth(P < ۰.۰۵). Hypocalcemia had a significant relationship with small for gestational age (SGA) (P = ۰.۰۰۷), lower mean birth weight (P= ۰.۰۲۵), and low Apgar score at one and five minutes after birth (P < ۰.۰۵).Conclusions: It is recommended to measure blood glucose and blood calcium in high-risk infants, including infants of diabeticmothers (IDMs), preterm infants, and infants with lower birth weight (LBW), SGA, and low Apgar score at one and five minutes afterbirth.
