External stability reliability analysis of the geotextile reinforced retaining wall by an analytical approach

Stochastic analysis of the geotextile reinforced retaining wall provides a tool for considering the uncertainty of the soil parameters' characteristics. In this paper, the Jointly Distributed Random Variables (JDRV) method is used as an analytical method to reliability index of the Sliding and Overturning stability of the geotextile reinforced retaining wall. The analysis is carried out based on Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM), and the granular soil parameter of the backfill is selected as an uncertain variable. The selected stochastic parameters are internal friction angle and unit weight of soil, which are modeled using a truncated normal Probability Density Function (PDF). A comparison of the probability density functions of the slope safety factor with the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) indicates the superior performance of the proposed approach. However, the required time to reach the same probability of failure is more remarkable for the MCS than for the JDRV method. Among the two components of external stability, the most critical component to soil heterogeneity is determined through the reliability index. It is shown that internal friction angle is the most influential parameter in the reinforced retaining wall.
