چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: The purpose of the present study is to compare the variables of social desirability, contingencies of self-worth, and BDD symptoms in applicants and non-applicants for cosmetic surgery. The current research was a causal-comparative description. Method: The study population included all men and women applicants for cosmetic surgery in centers of Rasht city between ۲۰۲۰ to ۲۰۲۱ among them, ۱۰۰ applicants for cosmetic surgery and ۱۰۰ as control group were selected through consecutive sampling. Research tools included Crowne-Marlowe social desirability scale (۱۹۶۰- MC–S), Cracker et al.’s contingencies of self-worth (CSWS-۲۰۰۳), and Yale-Brown Modified Obsessive Compulsive Scale for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (YBOCS-BDD-۱۹۹۷). Results: After controlling for age, gender, and levels of education, Univariate analysis of covariance demonstrated that there is no significant difference between people in applicants and non-applicant groups for cosmetic surgery in terms of social desirability (P≤.۰۵). The results also showed that after controlling the contextual variables of age, gender, and level of education, the overall score of body dysmorphic disorder symptoms was significantly higher in the groups seeking cosmetic surgery than the non-applicants group (P=۰.۰۰۴). The result of Multivariate analysis of covariance also showed that in a subscale of contingencies of self-worth, i.e. family support, the scores were significantly higher in applicants than the non-applicants group for cosmetic surgery (P<۰.۰۱). Conclusion: The results showed that there is a significant difference between the variables of social desirability, self-worth dependencies, and symptoms of body deformity disorder in people applying and not applying for cosmetic surgery.
