چکیده مقاله:

The purpose of the current study is to investigate the perceptions of high school EFL learners of demotivation and strategies used to reduce demotivation in EFL classrooms. It was explored through both qualitative and quantitative research methods. In the qualitative part of the study, the researchers used semi-structured interviews, including two main open-ended questions to indicate sources of demotivation and strategies used by learners to cope with demotivation, and a questionnaire to find out learners’ perceptions of reduction strategies. In this research, teachers’ characteristics, classroom environment, language learning anxiety, and students’ characteristics were identified as the demotivating factors. Moreover, the main strategies to reduce demotivation were investigated by providing a questionnaire from the perspective of the learners in this study. It was concluded that the reduction of demotivation strategies in the Iranian context of foreign language learning consisted of four components: self-studying, being goal-oriented, ignoring what others think or say, and thinking positively.
