Numerical evaluation of the influence of out-of-plane (OOP) confinement effects on shear strength in reinforced concrete (RC) beam

For reinforced concrete design and evaluation, the designer needs to compute the shear capacities for members based on their damage state. The main objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of out-of-plane confinement effects on shear strength in reinforced concrete through finite element analysis. In this paper, the numerical model is validated using the experimental model of the same set of reinforced concrete beams tested at the University of Toronto. Hence, two rectangular beams, the first one without shear reinforcements and the other one with shear reinforcement for this paper are utilized. The first specimen is used the reinforcement anchorage plate at the end of the beam, and failure was influenced by this method, as well as in the second specimen the shear bar is used. Both analytical models are modeled through VecTor۲ finite element program using two-dimensional finite element techniques. The numerical results of RC beams are compared with published laboratory tests consisting of failure mode, load-deflection response, ductility, and load capacity and the results indicate that numerical models have a good agreement with experimental results and numerical modes are validated. Furthermore, in the case of the beams, the out-of-plane confinement effect is considered, and this effect on numerical models has been investigated. The result reveals that increasing the out-of-plane ratio results in increasing shear strength in both specimens of RC beams. The VecTor۲ finite element simulations can predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete beams with acceptable accuracy.
