Russian Effects on Turkish and Iranian ModernArchitecture in the Early ۲۰th Century: A ComparativeReview of Nikolai Markov and Ivan Sergeevich Nikolaev

The comparison of architectural movements in Iran and Turkiye has long been a captivating subject of study for researchers. In this realm, the ۲۰th century emerges as the most interesting period; as both of these countries encountered similar problems and followed parallel political, social, and cultural trajectories throughout those years. The period witnessed an intense impact of rapid modernization on the architecture of both Turkiye and Iran; hence, to meet the emerging new and modern needs, foreign architects were invited to build new buildings not only from Europe but also from Russia, which had long-lasting historical relationships with the both. This paper intends to highlight the effects of Russian architects on Turkish and Iranian modern architecture in the early ۲۰th century, through Nikolai Markov’s and Ivan Sergeevich Nikolaev’s architecture.
