Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) to Determine the Vinyl Acetate/ Vinyl Benzoate Copolymer Composition

Reverse iodine transfer polymerization was used in the presence of iodine and AIBN initiator at 70 ˚C to prepare poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl benzoate) (P(VAc-co-VBz)) copolymers with different compositions. Investigation of the FT-IR spectra showed that copolymer composition can be estimated from these spectra. An FT-IR calibration curve based on the prepared copolymers with known compositions was obtained. Then, composition of the copolymers with unknown compositions was determined. Results obtained from theoretical investigations were in a good agreement with those obtained from FT-IR spectra, indication that this simple technique can accurately be used to determine composition of the P(VAc-co-VBz) copolymers
