Insects As Food: A Review On Challenges And Oppertiniteis

Background: Insects Complementary or essential part of the diet consists of about two billion people worldwide and about 2000 species of insects have been identified and consumed by humans. According to experts from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, insects, at least cost and their inclusion in a fully justifiable diet. The nutritional value of insects is high and the amount of protein, fat, minerals, amino acids and vitamins in them is high. However, the nutritional value of insects in terms of nutrient density per gram is far better than beef or even fish, which can be a good substitute for meat. For example, one cow for every 45 kg of food it receives, it produces 4.5 kg of meat, while the same amount of food if it is spent on cricket breeding will yield tens of times more crop.Objectives: So far, comprehensive study on how best to nurture these creatures commercially as a food source has not been standardized. The aim of this research is to explore the difficulties and opportunities of edible insets as a human and animal diet.Materials and Methods: This is a review manuscript in which the articles published in Farsi and English (2000-2019) by means of keywords such as edible insects and insect-based foodsin data bases include SID PubMed Science Direct were searched.Results: Lack of education and promotion of the culture of using edible insects and their products in Iran is one of the main reasons for the lack of acceptance of the consumers. If the cross section of human nutrition, can be insect powder for animal feed production, poultry and fish, especially marine ornamental use, because it is rich in essential amino acids and proteins useful.Conclusion: Considering the cultural and traditional characteristics of Iran, we can use edible insects with emphasis on safety and health of products, if mass production of edible insects in the country, in addition to supplying domestic demand as livestock and poultry diet, It can also emphasize its export and trade aspects.
