چکیده مقاله:

Rapid population growth and the resultant pollution of freshwater sources are expected to create water stress conditions on the world in the near future. Among wastewater treatment methods, biological wastewater treatment is one of the most important and common treatment methods. However, this method does not have a significant efficiency against some wastewaters, especially industrial wastewaters that have a high load, or non-biodegradable organic materials or heavy metals, so it is necessary to use an absorbent material such as activated carbon in these cases. The usefulness of activated carbon as a strong adsorbent is attributed to its unique properties, such as large surface area, high surface reactivity, comprehensive adsorption effect, and optimal pore size. This paper summarizes recent findings on the combination of biological treatment and activated carbon adsorption as a BAC system in industrial wastewater treatment with high organic load was summarized. The research results address the enhancement of biological treatment process coupled with activated carbon, the synergy between adsorption and biodegradation and the factors affecting on BAC.
